UPCOMING: Sufjan Stevens Silent Listening Party 3/17

SUFJAN FANS REJOICE! His new record, Carrie & Lowell, comes out on Asthmatic Kitty Records on 3/31! This record "sounds like memory: it spans decades yet does not trade on pastiche or nostalgia... Each track in this collection of eleven songs begins with a fragile melody that gathers steam until it becomes nothing less than a modern hymn." Basically, the whole album is going to wash over you and envelope you in a blanket of warmth and melancholy. Sounds like something to experience on your own right? So how in the hell are we having a listening party for this masterpiece?

SILENT LISTENING PARTY!

Here's how it works:
-You pre-order the album to guarantee your spot. (You can get it here or in-store)
-The night of the party, you come to Origami, grab a slice of free pizza and a drink and your own set of headphones.
-We all listen on our own, but experience this bliss together!

We're holding this party on March 17th at 6pm at the shop. This will be the first time you can hear the album in it's entirety - before it's even on the internet! We hope you can make it! Here's a little preview to wet your whistle.

EVENT ALERT: TEAM SPIRIT IN-STORE 02/28

Yahoooo! Brooklyn power-poppers Team Spirit is gracing our loft this Saturday (2/28) for an INVIGORATING, UNMISSABLE in-store performance at 7 PM!

Team Spirit is the brainchild of Ayad Al Adhamy who, after a a stint as the keyboardist for Passion Pit decided to ditch the old ivories in favor of the almighty axe. Following in the tradition of power-pop forefathers like Cheap Trick, Adhamy and co. are firm believers in the power of impossibly catchy hooks and energetic riffs. Their debut long-player, Killing Time came out last year on Vice Records and proved that Team Spirit are able to transcend their influences and create a great, exceedingly fun record.

IN-STORE: Michna TONIGHT @ 7 PM!!

Michna is dropping into the loft TONIGHT at 7 PM!! This is a comeback you wont want to miss!

Michna, or Adrian Michna, went on hiatus for awhile, but boy are we pretty stoked he is back at it. His first album Magic Monday was a big hit, and took his career in many other directions, including music production for video games and film scoring. Sometimes life takes you where it wants, but we are glad he didn't forget about the music, because his sophomore album Thousand Thursday, released on Ghostly, was well worth the wait.

His new album is quite obviously a celebration of Michna's love for spirited and vibrant electronic music. He doesn't fuss with the frills of conceptual or contextual baggage. All of his influences mess together seamlessly, but with great care, and it showcases his passions and maybe even where his mind has been in the last few years.

Tonight (2/21/15) at 7 PM we will be welcoming local glam rockers, Veneer into our shop to play some cuts from their forthcoming record, Chainspreader! Recorded by Johnny Bell of Crystal Antlers, this record fuses elements of mid-70's power pop with glam-punk à la New York Dolls and features lush string arrangements and the all-mighty saxophone. Check out a track from their 2014 record, Casual Magic below and pick up a copy for yourself tonight!

EVENT ALERT: TALL TALES AND THE SILVER LINING IN-STORE 2/22 @ 4 PM

Super stoked to be welcoming breezy local combo Tall Tales and the Silver Lining to our loft for an early in-store performance in anticipation of their forthcoming record, Tightropes, out next Tuesday (2/24) on Other Music Recording Co. Lead singer/songwriter, Trevor Beld Jimenez was raised on the sounds of 1970's AM radio as well as Los Angeles staples like The Byrds, Jackson Brown, and Neil Young and Crazy Horse, and these influences have undeniably  permeated into his warm pop-classicism. Check out Tightropes cut, "This Time Around" and tell me the lush, but not overbearing production coupled with Beld Jimenez's Tom Petty-esque earnestness doesn't make you want to jump into the car and go for a long, introspective drive. I dare you!

The show starts at 4 PM, but we think you should get here early and grab a copy of Tightropes before the 2/24 release date! See ya Sunday!

OV PRESENTS: FOMO Fest 2015 at The Echo Today @ 3 PM!!

FOMO Fest is back at The Echo, and they are packing the house with even more great bands!!

Fomo stands for "Fear of Missing Out", and believe us, you will be missing out big time if you don't hit up this show. The Echo is packing the stage with a ton of sick local bands, and you need to be there. Trust us. It's All Ages, and tickets are still available. Expect performances from all of the following: Line & Circle, Paul Bergmann, Harriet Brown, No Parents, Talk in Tongues, Winter, Bobby London, and StaG. Don't know a ton about these bands? Well, let us give you a few details.

Line & Circle is a band that hails from the Midwest, but is currently hanging out in Echo Park. The band was started by two guys named Brian, who moved to California and met the rest of the band. You should expect simple melodic phrases and hooky ostinatos that subvert the complications of the lyrics. Their sound is dark, glittering, and nostalgic, with nods to early 4AD Dream Pop.

Paul Bergmann, local heart-throb hero, is a folk craftsman, creative and commanding right down to his core. He strives for honesty, vulnerability, and straightforwardness in his music, but that doesn't mean it is simple in any way. He is often influenced by the natural aspects of LA, and with his partnership with Fairfax recordings he is set to release some new music soon. We are chomping at the bit, and you should be patiently waiting as well.

Harriet Brown is known to bring paradisical sounds, and sensual vibes. She is creating a new kind of romantic funk where past becomes future. Check her out.

No Parents only need one phrase of description "LA based punk band", and the rest you just have to experience for yourself.

Talk in Tongues happened like the big bang : unexpectedly with great force and undeterminable drive. Their new album, set to release early in 2015 on Fairfax Recordings is an artfully done combination of  Psychedelia with a foundation in early 60s style experimentation that creates the most beautiful ambient and melodic atmosphere.

Winter is based in LA, and she lives and breathes flowery dreamy sounds.

You can call Bobby London soul, funk, blues, voodoo, witchcraft, or just a byproduct of sweat, whiskey and love. Whatever you label it, you can't deny the greatness.

StaG is a combination of pop hook, danceable electronic beats, and subtle atmospheres that create a non-stop epic emotional climax in their live performances. Unique and hard to beat.

Now that you have insight on this eclectic mix of music greatness, you better be at The Echo at 3 PM! How can you deny yourself an experience like this one?

IN-STORE: JESSICA PRATT TONIGHT @ 7 PM!!!

We are way more than pleased to announce that Jessica Pratt will be gracing our shop tonight at 7 PM for an intimate in-store performance.

Pratt is, in this humble author’s opinion, one of the very best songwriters out there today and I can’t wait to hear her play some of the cuts from her brand new LP, Own Your Own Love Again (Drag City). This record proves what her debut self-titled release suggested: Pratt is a truly genius songwriter and performer. She has the rare ability to write songs that only seem delicate – Pratt’s tracks are so meticulously crafted and expertly woven together that they carry a weight few are able to achieve.

So gather ‘round ye Origami faithful and soak in Pratt’s timeless folk tonight!

IN-STORE: The Smoke Fairies TODAY @ 4 PM!

We here at Origami Vinyl are pleased to announce that UK folk duo, The Smoke Fairies will be performing in our loft this evening at 4 PM!

A longtime favorite of Jack White, the Fairies’ Jessica Davies and Katherine Blamire became the first British act released on his Third Man Records imprint back in 2009 with their 7” single, “Gastown.” Six critically acclaimed albums later, White continued to show his love for The Smoke Fairies yesterday when he performed with them on CBS TV for a Bob Dylan tribute alongside Neil Young, Beck, John Doe and more. Whoa! Anyways, we’re very excited to be hosting these ladies whose spooky, mist shrouded folk is sure to make for an ethereal late-afternoon, and should pair nicely with the free pizza we'll be serving!

IN-STORE: Virginia Reed TONIGHT @ 7 PM!

This evening, broody local rock n’ roll fiends, Virginia Reed will be gracing our loft in support of their new self-released record, Potential Enemies out on February 10th!

This four-piece band took their name from a photograph of a woman chief songwriter, Keith Hendrickson found while perusing an estate sale and felt he had met before in a previous life. Yikes! Scared yet? It gets worse... Turns out Virginia Reed is also the name of one of the members of the Donner Party – band names don’t get much spookier than this. But we promise Virginia Reed will draw you in and not scare you out! So come pile into our shop tonight at 7 PM and prepare for THRILLS and CHILLS as Hendrickson and co. throw down their dark and stormy dirges on our unsuspecting ears. It'll be quite the aural feast!

IN-STORE: Minnow TONIGHT @ 7 PM!!

Minnow is swimming into OV TONIGHT! Come catch them!

Minnow is an L.A based band that you really need to watch. Their self-titled album released in 2012 was recorded and pieced together from all different locations with much success, but Trembles & Temperance, released in November 2014 on Anchor Eighty Four Records, was approached a little differently.

The band placed a lot of emphasis on trying to capture the live sound and feeling on their new LP. Minnow also placed a lot more emphasis on vocal and harmony, to make an album that really flows with cohesion and ambience. But don't get me wrong, it may be more harmonious, but it still rocks. Minnow has managed with great success to smooth out the edges, without loosing the uniquely raw sound that was so welcomed on their EP.

Come on down TONIGHT at 7 PM and catch the set Minnow has prepared for the OV loft!
