This Week on OnTheRecord.tv :: The One AM Radio

Our friends at OnTheRecord.tv recently caught up with Hrishikesh Hirway and his band The One AM Radio for a late afternoon jaunt in our loft. Sanctuary from the stifling summer heat in the loft was handily provided by Hrishikesh's smooth, measured vocals while backing members Scott Leahy and Fontaine Cole dropped a steady dream-like groove on the audience.

Today we bring you their performance of "Everyone But You" from their newest record 'Heaven is Attached by a Slender Thread' on Dangerbird Records.

PALEO in-store on THURSDAY!!!

Is there a void in your analogue-nomadic-folk record collection? Heralded as a cross between Bob Dylan and The Violent Femmes (and we're thinking a slightly tripped-out The Tallest Man on Earth), Paleo (aka David Strackany) is the answer to your foot stompin', midnight ghost conjurations in addition to your early summer desert traispes. Or, remember that scene in La Bamba where Ritchie meets the spiritual snake man in Tijuana to cure his extreme fear of flying? Yeah, it's kind of like that. (Katie Guymon - Speakers In Code)

PALEO plays in our loft at 7pm on Thursday, 6/30

The new album, Fruit of the Spirit, is out now through Partisan Records. Listen to a track below.

TALL TALES & THE SILVER LINING IN-STORE THIS WEDNESDAY

Since their inception, Venturans Tall Tales and the Silver Lining have been crafting seamless, picturesque pop rock that speaks strongly to their environment. Even awash in brushed drums and twangy guitar tones, Tall Tales’ songs call out to their West Coast roots: breezy, warm, and rich in ’60s Cali folk nods. For Nice to Meet You Again, the band is, at first glance, up to their old tricks again; “Dyed in the Wool” leads things off with frontman Trevor Beld-Jimenez’s familiar, cheerful speak-sing. But as Meet You progresses, so do its sonic tricks: “Into the Fray” boasts a funky, Black Keys-esque bass line; “Show Me,” a galloping drum roll straight out of the Old West. Even better, these sonic stretches don’t detract from Beld-Jimenez’s lyrics, which remain as heartfelt, imaginative, and sweetly nostalgic as ever. (Aly Comingore)

Trevor and cohorts play at 7pm on Wednesday, June 29th and snag yourself up a copy of their fantastic new album.

FRANK FAIRFIELD INSTORE - TONIGHT AT 6PM

Frank Fairfield may have an old folk sound, but he's just 24, and he hails from California's central valley — not Appalachia.

With his Brylcreem-parted hair and high-waisted pants, he brings an old-time aesthetic to his old-time music. On his self-titled first album, released last year, he plays the standards of the American folk repertoire — songs that have been played by many artists over generations. (Jeff Weiss)

Let's get more familiar, shall we?

Man, he plays a mean fiddle...and can sing a delightful tune as well. We are honored to have him back in our loft this evening to celebrate his new LP, Out on the Open West (Tompkins Square).

Frank has played the store a couple times, back in 2009 in celebration of OV's first Record Store Day and a couple times as a rogue street performer in front of our shop on the sidewalk. Since those times, Frank has seen a rewarding trajectory, playing with Fleet Foxes and getting rave reviews from peeps like Brooklyn Vegan and Pitchfork, and most recently embarking on a European tour. This will be an incredible event and we hope you can check this out.

Here are the deets:

The Prids In-Store Performance TONIGHT @ 7pm

Get your weekend started right with The Prids in our Loft at 7pm!!

The Prids, who hail from Portland, Or, blend 90's guitar grind with dream pop synths and heavenly vocals to make the happiest of melancholy music. This is definitely for fans of The Pixies, Built to Spill, Jesus and Mary Chain, and The Comas. In fact Doug Martsch of BtoS is a big fan of the band and played on "Chronosynclastic"

Come check 'em out and pick up their new LP on Velvet Blue! We don't you think you'll be disappointed!

¡OUTERNATIONAL! IN-STORE TOMORROW

Want something to do this week? As always, we've got the skinny on some fantastic Origami-bound activities for your calendar. Check out this sweet selection!

You might have seen the name ¡Outernational! appearing lately. And why not with someone like Tom Morello usually uttered in the same sentence. But don't let the hype tell you what to think. Falling somewhere between The Pogues, Gogol Bordello & The Clash, Outernational's high energy live performance will speak of a face melting, foot stomping, fist pumping roller coaster ride through a maze of influences from decades of rock and roll, punk, hip hop and world music.

Tomorrow we celebrate, for the first time on vinyl, Outernational's debut EP 'Eyes On Fire'. Produced by Tom Morello, standout tracks are 'Fighting Song', 'New York Parasite', and 'In Their Sights'. Check out 'Fighting Song' below for a glimpse of what to expect.

Outernational - Fighting Song Ft. Tom Morello

¡Outernational! plays at 7pm in the Origami Loft and will be hanging out and signing records afterwards.

See you there!!

The Growlers Perform "Gay Thoughts" on Record Store Day, April 16th 2011

On April 16th, 2011 vinyl aficionados across the country flocked to their local record stores in celebration of Record Store Day to show their support of independent music retailers and hopefully get lucky enough to snag a copy of one of the many limited edition EP's that go on sale in celebration of the event.

Here at Origami Vinyl in Echo Park, RSD was rung in with a series of live performances and the special release of dozens of limited pressings. One of these discs was the 7" of "Gay Thoughts" by LA outfit The Growlers. The band descended onto the loft to play a full set, including the title track off their new 7". The store was packed to the gills, with scores of fans spilling out onto the streets in a mosh pit that only ended after the third encore.

Brooks, the Growlers front man, played a dangerous game throughout as he danced close to the edge of stage, ignoring the potential for a two-story drop onto the crowd below. A metaphor for the band's barely-maintained sense of propriety? Or a functioning example of a band that finds its center on the edge of reason?

TONIGHT!! Origami Vinyl Presents "THE REACH OF RESONANCE" Art Show & Film Screening

Origami Vinyl Presents:
"THE REACH OF RESONANCE" Art Show & Film Screening
5pm - Art Show & Reception @ Origami Vinyl - FREE
7pm - Film Screening @ Echo Park Film Center - $5

Steve Elkins, the director of the incredible documentary "The Reach of Resonance", has been a dear friend of ours for 16 years. About 8 years ago he started to dig in on creating his first film, documenting experimental music and the inner workings of famed musician Nels Cline. Through those early sessions, Steve started to learn more about "experimental" musicians that utilize their environments to create sound and a deeper understanding of their surroundings. This led to the evolution of his filming process and birthed "The Reach of Resonance"

Although the film is currently on an international tour with stops at the Louvre, Tate Modern, and National Gallery in Washington DC, Elkins wants to share the film with his neighborhood through this community screening at The Echo Park Film Center @ 7pm on June 19th, which was organized in collaboration with Origami Vinyl, who will host an exhibition of artwork inspired by the film, opening a couple hours before this screening. At least fifteen local and international artists will contribute visual interpretations of the film and its themes, especially the ways in which music affects brains, bodies and culture. Origami Vinyl is just around the corner, so guests can walk from the exhibition’s 5pm opening party to the screening at 7pm at the Echo Park Film Center. The screening will end with a Q&A with director Steve Elkins.

Here is a description:
Echo Park filmmaker Steve Elkins' award-winning feature documentary "The Reach Of Resonance" is a meditation on the meaning of music, which juxtaposes the creative paths of four musicians who use music to cultivate a deeper understanding of the world around them. Among them are Miya Masaoka using music to interact with insects and plants; Jon Rose, utilizing a violin bow to turn fences into musical instruments in conflict zones ranging from the Australian outback to Palestine; John Luther Adams translating the geophysical phenomena of Alaska into music; and Bob Ostertag, who explores global socio-political issues through processes as diverse as transcribing a riot into a string quartet, and creating live cinema with garbage. By contrasting the creative paths of these artists, and an unexpected connection between them by the world renowned Kronos Quartet, the film explores music not as a form of entertainment, career, or even self-expression, but as a tool to develop more deeply meaningful relationships with people and the complexities of the world they live in.

Echo Park Film Center is located at 1200 N. Alvarado just North of Sunset Blvd in Echo Park

Also, Origami Vinyl will be presenting an exhibition of artwork inspired by "The Reach Of Resonance" at 5pm. Among the amazing artists contributing are: Brook Peterson, Pamela Bjorklund, Nadia Botello, Katie Byron, Becky Calinsky, Jerry Lee Cibilic, Christopher Clother, John DeHeras, Shea M Gauer, Ghostghostteeth, Kio Griffith, Mike Guzman, Tom Krumpak, Mary MacQueen, Reuben Mahler, Matt Maust, Danny Miller, Theresa Morgan, Christine Nguyen, Christie Yuri Noh, Charlie Visnic, Norton Wisdom, and Michael Wysong.

Hope to see you tonight!

Miracle Parade In-Store Performance TONIGHT @ 7pm

Tonight we are excited to present the vinyl release party for Miracle Parade's "Hark!...And Other Lost Transmissions" here in our loft.

Miracle Parade is the fancy moniker for singer/songwriter Christopher Pappas (from the Everyday Visuals). His music lives in creeks and cracks of subtlety. Steeped in Lo-Fi acoustics and rustic ambiance. A recent Los Angeles transplant, his new LP "Hark!..." was produced and released by Pierre de Reeder (Rilo Kiley, Jenny and Johnny, M. Ward, Death Cab For Cutie) and plans to be the final straw that shakes Los Angeles into the ocean. - plaid elephant

Check out Atlantic/Pacific live in our loft

We were fortunate enough to have Atlantic/Pacific come by a few nights ago to play songs for us in our lovely loft. Luckily our friends at Yowie.com were on hand to catch the performance for your repeated viewing pleasure. For those who are unfamiliar, Atlantic/Pacific is the new project from Garrett Klahn (former singer of Texas Is The Reason) & John Herguth (House & Parish). Pulling mostly from tracks off of their new LP 'Meet Your New Love' out now on No Sleep Records, which you can snag right here at OV! While there is a marked difference between this and their former acts we think it's well worth a listen or ninety. Check 'em out!

In-Stores: The Week Ahead!!

We work hard to keep lots of great music coming through our doors both recorded and live. Well this week is no different...Here's a heads up on some great in-stores you won't want to miss.

Fists up for first up! Friday, June 17th at 7pm join us to celebrate the release of 'Hark! And Other Lost Transmissions' by Miracle Parade. Miracle Parade began in 2010 as a studio experiment for Christopher Pappas and has since evolved into a full-fledged alter ego for the singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist. After recording some bedroom demos Miracle Parade caught the ear of Rilo Kiley’s bassist Pierre de Reeder, who then signed Miracle Parade to his label, Little Record Company.

At his core, Miracle Parade’s Pappas is a storyteller whose fables explore the choices we make and the things we leave behind. The physicist who spends his life building a time machine so he can go back and not waste his life building a time machine (“The Dying Physicist”), The open letter to the son he never had because he chose the life of a traveling musician (“Son Son (Son)”), The love for a girl who refused to let herself love (“Change of Heart”).
Ultimately, these songs are the recorded histories of our collective story, as told through the jangled guitars and hushed melodies of an relentless alchemist who takes the pangs of regret and spins it into something beautiful. “Hark!…” is a time capsule created as an apology to all the potential lives left behind and as a celebration of the one that remains, transmitted to the universe, calling out: “Is anyone there?”

Heads up second up!! Saturday, June 18th at 7pm is the smashing double header of The One AM Radio + DREAMtapes, both hot on the heels of new releases.
The One AM Radio just released their second full length 'Heaven Is Attached By A Slender Thread' on Dangerbird. For Hrishikesh Hirway, the heart of The One AM Radio, the new LP is about living on the fumes of dreams and hopes, which also happen to be what the plastic city of Los Angeles is built on, and what it is constantly confirming—and betraying. At one point, Hrishikesh’s idea was to make a dance record, and now, he admits, that’s not really how it turned out. But the album does make you want to move, to run, to get in the car and drive fast through the empty city in the middle of the night — to remember how tenuous the hold is on all the things you have, and want, and long for.

DREAMtapes is the pet project turned reality of Estelle Raskina and her team of talented bandmates. Dreamtapes are a, yes, dreamy, jangly new L.A. act who is celebrating the release of their first EP 'I Disappear' out now on Manimal. Dreamtapes is Estelle Raskina, Rachel Glassberg, Yosuke Kitazawa & Tim Phillips. That's all you need to know.

Lastly but not leastly!!! Sunday, June 18th at 7pm is Minneapolis baroque-punk trio BruteHeart. Crystal Brinkman, Jackie Beckey and Crystal Myslajek of BruteHeart make an on-the-hunt sound that's the same as feeling as if every inch of your skin was pulling against its glue, separating itself from the hairs and pores. The Minneapolis band takes its stringed instruments into harm's way, leading them into dark alleys, out into the night, into fields that have all of your sensory organs tingling as you feel as if you just must be standing on a grave right now. Something, some bones, must be tossing and turning below the dirt down there. It's something. It's gotta be something. Or someone's tailing you, not all that far behind, getting closer, but staying out of sight, for now, building the suspense into a real storm. It could just be an ice storm. That might be what's impending, what's bearing down on us - the winds changing, the cold front getting colder and suddenly we're walking on slippery footing, falling and smashing our hip and elbow. BruteHeart music could be described as a sexy birdcall to all ravens, enticing them in with some active percussive work and the echoing swan song of lost and dead lovers, rattling out across the open sky, wandering like a ragged and tired gypsy. The spirits of these loves are warm and cold at the same time, flickering like shaky candles, but offering orangey goodness in an oval-shaped reflection on the wall. Brinkman, Beckey and Myslajek, the way their three vocals weave and mix together, is heavenly and you can pick out the differences, even as they seem to meld. There are instances where one sounds a bit more like Joanna Newsom and then another sounds like something closer to Grace Slick and yet all put together, it sounds like a twisted, haunted take on Andrew Bird territory. (Daytrotter) Check out their Daytrotter session here and grab a copy of their latest 'Lonely Hunter' out now on Soft Abuse.

We hope to see you out & about! SUPPORT LOCAL (and new) MUSIC!

Seryn In-Store Performance TONIGHT @ 6pm!!!

Seryn is a 5 piece band who calls Denton, Texas their home. The scene in Denton is bustling, and Seryn merged right into it ! When listening to the well layered textures of guitars, ukulele, accordion, bass, viola, banjo and various percussion, it's hard to imagine This Is Where We Are is the band's debut effort. The band's strength resides in their musical talent and the understanding of dynamics. Their beauty is gracefully displayed through chilling harmonies. Each member and their voice carry equal importance. One is not complete without the other.

It is in this craft that the young band shines so bright. It has earned them a sound that isn't easily defined, but still proven triumphant. What may first appear as straight folk songs, later transcend into noisy walls of sound, or almost film score sound scapes. The term "Folk-Pop" has been thrown around and maybe it loosely fits, but we will leave the definitions up to you.

The Denton Record-Chronicle said "Seryn's set was so dynamic that you could feel the key changes in your feet, through Festival Hall’s concrete floor!". While the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported about the same performance, "Watching Seryn perform, it's hard to convince yourself that those crystalline, multi-part harmonies are not pre-recorded or some kind of sleight of ear." You can see where this is going...

This is Where We Are was produced by Britton Beisenherz (Ramble Creek), and recorded over the course of a few months. The experience felt at their live show seems to be captured well in these recordings, which was something of great importance to the band. The band has also created their own buzz in the most traditional way too by winning people over at their shows. It's not often that a band without a record out is able to play so many great bills and sold out shows. Much less, be nominated for awards such as Best Folk Artist, and Song of the Year (Dallas Observer). There is no shortage of regional press on them, but the band is excited to take their sound, their show, and their new record on the road. T hey will be traveling all over the US in the coming months. Go see them play and you will be sucked in!

The band will be playing our loft TONIGHT @ 6pm! What a great way to start the weekend!

ATLANTIC/PACIFIC INSTORE TONIGHT!

Meet Your New Love, the debut from Brooklyn’s Atlantic/Pacific, is a beautifully hushed collection of hazy, spaced-out late night songs, complete with psychedelic swirls and swooning guitars. But there are a few more reasons to get excited about the band than, you know, good music. Namely, Atlantic/Pacific is the new act from Garrett Klahn, formerly the singer of influential proto-emo badasses Texas Is the Reason (think Promise Ring, et al), who broke up back in 1997. Don’t expect the same pummeling crunch, though — Atlantic/Pacific might as well be the lulling, gorgeous calm after the storm. (My Old Kentucky Blog)

The duo will perform in our loft tonight at 7pm.

See you tonight!
